How To Adjust Self Closing Door Hinges

If the self closing door to your garage isn t closing hard enough to latch properly or the door slams shut you can adjust the spring hinge tension with a hex wrench and pliers.
How to adjust self closing door hinges. Using your screwdriver turn the front screw clockwise to bring the hinge bearing edge of the door closer to the cabinet side. This hole is normally located either at the top or the bottom of the hinge s housing. Remove the locking pin by rotating the adjustment in the direction of the jamb. Start by removing the locking pin photo 1. Turn the wrench clockwise if you want the door to close faster. Only adjust the hinge by 1 position at a time so you don t overtighten or break the hinge. Place the locking pin nearer to the door and release the spring pressure.
If you need to push the door away turn the screw counterclockwise to bring the door in better alignment with the vertical edge of the cabinet. Rotate the wrench a quarter turn clockwise until you hear it click into the new position. Press the wrench down firmly to engage the locking mechanism inside the hinge.
